Republican operatives who were once salivating to run against Dean and his liberal agenda in November, meanwhile, have begun writing him off.
"If Kerry beats Bush, maybe Dean can be ambassador to Japan," a prominent Republican official scoffed. "He's finished, he's done, he's toast."
As for Kerry, the GOP source added, "He's probably the eventual nominee, but not before he's bloodied in the South."
